| The French Colonial time (1857-1945)
On August 31, 1858, a French naval squadron set foot on Danang (Tourane ), which
heralded the beginning of colonial occupation that would last almost a century.
At first, French imperialism, then in full expansion, was attacking a
decaying feudal monarchy which lost the support from its people. At that time,
The Nguyen dynasty, which had ascended the throne after repressing a large-scale
uprising, restored the feudal system and all of its repressive institutions...see

| Vietnamese culture |
|
| The richness
of Vietnam 's origins is evident throughout
its culture. The spiritual life of
Vietnamese people has been shaped by four
great philosophies and religions namely
Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and
Christianity. Over the centuries,
Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have
melded with popular Chinese beliefs and
ancient Vietnamese animism to form what is
known as Tam Giao (or 'Triple Religions').
Despite
dialectic variations throughout the country,
Vietnamese (Kinh) still confirm its status
as the official and normative language.
However, there are dozens of different
languages spoken by various ethnic
minorities...see

| Vietnam History |
|
| Vietnam is located in a region considered a cradle of mankind, one of the
earliest agricultural centers practicing wet rice farming, where the stone and
metallurgical revolutions took place. On the basis of socio-economic
development
in the time of the Đông Sơn culture and given the struggle with nature and
against aggression, Văn Lang State, the first State in Vietnam was established
in the 7th century B.C. Thanks to their hard work and creativeness, Văn Lang
(and then Âu Lạc) residents created a civilization that influenced the entire
Southeast Asian region. Together with the formation of the first State in
Vietnam’s history was the evolution of a diverse economy and advanced culture
known as the Red River civilization (or Dong Son civilization) symbolized by
Đông Sơn bronze drum, a heritage reflecting the quintessence of the lifestyle,
traditions and culture of the ancient Vietnamese...see

| Liberation Time |
|
The sudden collapse of Saigon in April 1975 set the stage for a new and
uncertain chapter in the evolution of Vietnamese society. The Hanoi government
had to confront directly what communists have long called the struggle between
the two paths of socialism and capitalism. At issue was Hanoi's ability to
translate its wartime success and socialist revolutionary experience into
postwar rehabilitation and reconstruction, now that it controlled the South
territorially.
Foremost among the regime's imperatives was that of restoring order and
stability to the war-torn South. The critical question, however, was whether or
not the northern conquerors could inspire the southern population...see

| Vietnam War |
|
For most of us it is history - over two thirds of Vietnam's population was
born after the war ended in 1975. However, those who lived through part, or all,
of that terrible time look back in sadness,
not anger or rancor - even those who lost children and loved ones, or still
suffer from war injuries or the effects of napam and chemical weapons.
Many American citizens coming here were struck by the warmth of the welcome they
receive. It was quite different to what they’d thought before. Some even
expressed their admiration for Vietnamese people’s ability to put the past
behind them. Indeed, for us, the war is in the past - we're now looking forward
to the future...se more
