Son Dong Cave
Son Dong cave is now a popular tourist destination in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Bố Trạch district, Quảng Bình Province, Vietnam. This magnificent cave means “Mountain River cave”, near Loas- Vietnam Boarder. It is 200 meter wide, 150 meters high and 6.5 meters long making it the fastest and the longest underground river in the whole world.
Its History
In 1991, the river was discovered by a local resident named Hồ-Khanh in 1991. The local residence most especially those who go to the jungle is afraid with whistling sound that the underground river is making. But it was not in 2009, that the British Cave Research Association made an exploration of the cave and found out that this underground river is larger than the world renowned Deer Cave in Malaysia which holds the record of being the largest underground river in the world. The National geographic has also visited and recognize the cave as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking places that any person can visit.
What to Expect in the Cave
It will take two hours to search Son Dong cave- the biggest and the longest cave passage. This cave is abundant with different species of fishes and sea creatures, some are yet to be discovered by scientist. This makes the place an interesting place not just for tourist but as well as for scientists who want to discover new species. The pristine water and the calming environment will take all your worries away and will surely give you the chance to see Mother Nature’s work of art at its finest.
How Long Will It Take to Get There?
It will take six hours to trek the nine kilometers of long forest from the Truong Son Highway to Son Dong cave. There are two ways for people to reach the cave. It is either by train or by plain. A ride from the night train station in Hanoi will let you reach the place by the next morning or you can also take any of the four flights per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) at around six in the morning from Hanoi airport. You can also take any of the four flights from Saigon.
What to Bring
Although there will be a first aid kit and food to give for free, it is important that you bring your own medicines, insect repellent and enough clothes and food and bottled water during the camping. If you are on medication, do not forget to bring your prescribe medicines.
Best
time to travel:The best time to travel in the cave is around from January to September and End of November to December. October and November is rainy season. We still organise tour but need to checked for weather condition closed to time of arrival.
Touring the Son Dong Cave
It is best that you tour the cave with an experience tourist guide. Our company will offer great tour of the place. Our tour guide will give you one of a kind experience in touring the cave. Our tour will take about 16 kilometers and will last for three days and two nights.
Day one will include private transfer, trekking, camping and exploring En cave. Day two will be about exploring the cave for four to five hours. Foods will be included in the package.
The tour package will include camping gear, cave exploration, travel, English speaking tour guides, meals, service from rangers and the porters and first aid kit.

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park’s
core zone to discover Son Doong Cave.
11:30 We reach Doong Village, a
secluded village in jungle. We will have picnic lunch in
the village. After
lunch we begin a trek through jungle
toward En Cave (Swallow Cave).
14:00 We reach En Cave, a
beautiful cave with over 2km in length and 49m in
height. We will explore the
cave, taking photo then set our camp
near a stream. Our support team will catch fish in the
stream to cook
our dinner.
18:00 Have dinner and sleep in
tent.
