Opened
in September, 2004, and located a few steps away from
St. Joseph's Cathedral (hence its name), the Church is
Hanoi's first genuine bijou hotel. The term means 'small
and elegant' and it qualifies on both counts.
The hotel has 20 rooms with three levels of
accommodation. Standard and Superior differ only in the
view they afford. Each has a large, comfortable bed or
beds, a good quality wooden floor and stylish modern
furniture. The bathroom is average size, but well
equipped with high quality sanitary-ware and fittings.
There are two Suites. One is the usual arrangement of a
large sitting room with good furniture with an opening
leading to a similar sized bedroom. |

The
Army hotel was built in 1960. This is a three star
hotel with good locations in Hanoi. It's the only one
three star hotel which has a swimming pool. About five
minutes walk from the Hoan Kiem Lake, it's located in a
quiet back street near the Opera House and the History
Museum.
The Army Hotel's rooms appear to be in four
categories - Standard, Superior, Deluxe and Suite. In
reality, the first three are all the same standard and
price, the difference being configuration and furniture. |

The
eight-storey Zephyr is an attractive new boutique hotel
a few short steps from Hoan Kiem Lake, the heart of
Hanoi. It's small, just 38 rooms in five categories, but
has one of the most convenient locations in the city.
All rooms are well designed with high quality
furniture and soft furnishings. The colour scheme is
light and muted. The front elevation faces one of
Hanoi's busiest roads: however, although windows are not
double-glazed, the glass is thick enough to mute traffic
noise to a low murmur, especially on the higher floors.
All front facing room have a side view of the lake -
those on the upper floors are cleverly angled to widen
the sweep.

The Sunway is situated on Pham Dinh Ho, a quiet
street about 15 minutes walk from the city centre. It's
an attractive building in what was once a French
residential area. The hotel
is well regarded by our clients - the only quibble is
the distance from the city centre.
Entering the building, we're always impressed by the
exotic orchids in the reception, lounge and bar area. It
has a cosy ambiance with plenty of high-quality
woodwork, stylish furniture and intelligent use of
lighting.

undistinguished facade belies the well designed
interior. The entrance lobby is stylish and attractive.

The
eighteen-storey Daewoo Hotel is about five kilometres
from Hoan Kiem Lake, the heart of the tourist area. It
was opened in 1996 with 18 eighteen-storey building. The
ground floor of the Daewoo is unusually spacious. That,
and a well-chosen color scheme, creates a atmosphere of
unhurried calmness. Also unusually, the reception area
is well to the left rather than the usual location
opposite he main entrance. |

more than compensates for the five-minute taxi ride to

The seven-storey Hilton Hanoi Opera is in the city centre within easy
walking distance to Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old
Quarter.
Built in 1999, it's a French colonial style building
sweeping in a long curve along one side of Hanoi's
magnificent Opera House, a smaller replica of Paris's
Opera Garnier. It's a rare example of modern city
architecture not just complementing an historic
neighbour but actually enhancing it. Fortunately, the
designers ignored the temptation to install large
windows and thus destroy the area's architectural
integrity - even so, the occasional Philistine complains
because the upper floors don't have a floor to ceiling
panorama despite a perfectly adequate view. |
