Famous tombs in Hue

The old capital – Hue is famous for  many historical relics. Visiting this place, travellers can see many tombs of unique and beautiful architecture.

Gia Long tomb: It is the tomb of the King Nguyen The To Gia Long (1762 – 1820) who was the first King of Nguyen Empire. Nowadays, it is located in Huong Tho commune, Huong Tra town.

Built from 1814 to 1820, this mausoleum is very large with the total of 42 hills and mountains.

It was devided among 3 main areas: tomb area, Bi Dinh area and the vicinity area. This mausoleum is a perfect combination between ancient architecture and majestic scenery.

Minh Mang tomb: This is the burial place of second King of Nguyen Empire’s. It is located on Cam Khe mountain, next to Huong river, and was built from 1840 to 1843.

Its area is 26 ha, including 40 small and big buildings surrounded by hills, mountains, and lakes or rivers. It is a structure which is valuable in archecture and art.

Trieu Tri tomb: It is the tomb of the King Trieu Tri belonging to the complex of Hue Historical Relics which was recognized as a world heritage by UNESCO. It is the combination between Gia Long tomb and Minh Mang tomb.

Tu Duc tomb: Built from 1864 to 1867, this is the tomb of the King Nguyen Duc Tong, located in Thuong Ba village, Thuy Xuan, Hue city. It was delicately built, which partly reflects the romance, and artistic personality of the King Tu Duc. It is recognized as the most beautiful among mausoleums of Nguyen Empire.

Duc Duc tomb: Located in An Cuu, Hue city, Duc Duc tomb was built in 1898. It is the place where the Kings Duc Duc, Thanh Thai, and Duy Tan were buried. Compared with other tombs, it is not outstanding.

Dong Khanh tomb: Located between Trieu Tri and Tu Duc tomb, it was built from 1888 to 1923. It is the combination between traditional architecture and West Europe’s architecture.

Khai Dinh tomb: It’s the tomb of the King Khai Dinh – the 12th King of Nguyen Empire, it is combined between the East’s and the West’s architecture. This tomb was built from 1920 to 1930, and famous for the set of three pictures “nine dragons in cloud” considered most monumental and valuable set.
